STOP DIABETES MOVEMENT (SDM) - 10 DAYS YOGA CAMP

According to American Diabetes Association, in 2015, over 30 million Americans had diabetes and over 80 million were pre-diabetic.  In March 2018, American Diabetes Association estimated direct health care costs relating to Diabetes as $237 billion dollars.  This is an alarming statistic!!   Stop Diabetes Movement – Yoga workshop aims to reduce health care costs in the long run by improved health, improved productivity, and reduced dependency on medication.

WHAT IS SDM?

SDM (Stop Diabetes Movement) is a 25 hours yoga program designed by Dr. Nagarathna & her research team at  SVYASA – Yoga University, Bangalore , India. This yoga Module  helps to control and manage active diabetes. All the yoga practices are safe and proven by research to be helpful in management of diabetes. The program is delivered under the supervision of medical doctors and trained yoga therapists by SVYASA Houston.

Yoga for Diabetes: Yoga helps in prevention and management of diabetes by lifestyle change (diet, exercise, habits and stress reduction) through mind management. Nearly 100 research publications in indexed international journals from around the world has shown that, yoga helps in several ways:

AIM of SDM

SDM aims at bringing down the growing curve of diabetes, using Yoga based Lifestyle intervention.

SDM - Stop Diabetes Movement

Objectives:

  • Primary prevention: Prevent Pre-diabetics to become diabetics and
  • Secondary prevention: Preventing the complications; converting diabetes condition from severe to moderate, moderate to mild, and from mild to normal
  • Normalize blood glucose (Fasting and postprandial)
  • Normalize Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1C)
  • Reduce bad cholesterol & Increase good cholesterol
  • Normalize weight and BMI & Reduce oral medication
  • Increases good cholesterol, nerve conduction velocity.
  • Reduce anxiety & depression & Improve quality of life

Program Outline:

  •     10 Days sessions, daily 2 hours – Consecutive days.
  •     Yoga postures/ Asanas and stretches
  •      Pranayama (Yoga breathing) and relaxation
  •      Stress management through yoga
  •      Concepts of Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy for Diabetes
  •      Yogic Diet and nutrition for diabetes
  •      Personal consultation from medical doctors
  •      Yogic Counselling by C-IAYT Therapists.

Recognition of Dr. R. Nagarathna by ADA

In 2019, Dr. R. Nagarathna was selected by American Diabetes Association for Association’s Vivian Fonseca and Nagendran Family Diabetes Research Award for the abstract submitted to the Scientific Sessions: “Diabetes Prevention through Yoga-Based Lifestyle”  The Vivian Fonseca and Nagendran Family Diabetes Research Award recognizes diabetes research focused on the South Asian, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations and/or research by a scientist from these areas of the world.
